My God is So Big!
I once was scrolling on Instagram and watched a video that said you should do a creative task while you’re flying as your “creative juices” are flowing at their best at the highest elevation. Since every-thing you see on social media is true, I’d thought I’d try it out and write this arti-cle while being thousands of feet in the air. Greg has also told me he used to look out the window of his office and write articles based on what he saw, so I guess I’m trying two new things in this article!
I can’t help but think of the song that the kids often sing and one that I must ad-mit I haven’t sung or thought of in quite a while. The song titled “My God is so Big”. Think about these lyrics: “My God is so big! So strong and so mighty. There’s nothing my God cannot do. My God is so big! So strong and so mighty. There’s nothing my God cannot do. The mountains are His and the valleys are His and the trees are His handiwork too. My God is so big! So strong and so mighty. There’s nothing my God cannot do for you.” Isn’t that the truth?! In the constant movement of life from getting to practices, appointments, birthday parties, graduations, sporting events and more, it’s easy to get caught up in the motion and never in the beauty of what’s around. Next time you’re outside I encourage you to just look up into the sky regardless of its color or time of day. Think about what you see. Think about the fact that God created what you’re looking at on the second day of creation (Genesis 1:6-8). When you look at the sky think about when the Israelites were leaving Egypt and heading to the promised land what God fed them with. Mana, bread from heaven (Exodus 16:4-7). Can you imagine your next meal falling from the sky? That’s happened before and that’s the power of our God. Think about what led them from out of Egypt. A cloud by day and a fire by night (Exodus 13:22)! Isn’t that amazing! Think about a prophet of God who was taken up from heaven in a fiery chariot (2nd Kings 2:11-14). The prophet Elijah never died and was taken up into heaven. Can you imagine being Elisha seeing that? What about the one who after having lived a perfect life, was crucified and rose on the third day? The One who appeared amongst His apostles for 40 days before ascending (Acts 1:2-3), Ascending into the sky. Re-member what Acts 1:9 says “And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were watching, and a cloud took Him up, out of their sight.”
As I currently look at my window (got the window seat which is a win in my opinion!) I see we are on the same level as the clouds. These little white things that from the ground we look up and see things like animals, someone’s face, or maybe even someone’s face on an animal’s body. These things that we have given the names Cumulus, Cirrus, Stratus etc. Jesus went up to heaven on one of those. If you turn your Bibles over to Genesis 6, you’ll find a story that most certainly involves clouds. The “floodgates of the sky” opened and water fell from them like they never had before and never will again as God has promised. Speaking of that promise, that’s another thing we can see when we look up. The beautiful rainbow that is a sign to both us and God that He will never flood the earth again (Genesis 9).
I’m also a lot closer to the sun than normal in this airplane! Think about the sun in the Scriptures! God made that on the fourth day of creation (Genesis 1:14-19). When He was showing His power against Egypt remember what He did for the 9th plague? Darkness over the land of the Egyptians (Exodus 10:21-29). When the Israel-ites were in a battle in Joshua 10, do you remember what Joshua
prayed for? “Sun, stand still at Gibeon, And the moon, at the valley of Aijalon! (Joshua 10:12b). That’s exactly what happened! Isn’t that amazing? What about when our Lord was on the cross and it was said that darkness fell over the whole land from the sixth hour to the ninth hour (Mark 15:33). That would be from Noon to 3pm in our way of keep time. What about when the Lord comes back and brings His people to heaven? There won’t be any more need for that sun that we rely on so much. The reason being is because of what is said in Revelation 21:23, that glory of God gives it light.
It’s very easy to get so fixated on how big the trials of life, how much we have to get done at work, how school just keeps piling on assignments, and more. We get so focused on these things that we forget the fact that kids from the littlest of ages sing: “My God is so big! So strong and so mighty. There’s nothing my God cannot do.” He’s bigger, He’s greater than my problems and yours as well. Do you remember what David said when he stood against Goliath? A man who David no doubt had to look up in order to see his face. David didn’t look at Goliath as the one who was the biggest, but his focus was on the One who made the things that could be seen be-yond the view of Goliath. The sun, the moon, the stars, and the clouds. David was focused on the fact his God was so big, so strong and so mighty and because of that fact it didn’t matter that this gi-ant in front of him wasn’t just a giant, but a champion fighter (1st Samuel 17:4). I believe and this is my opinion, there could’ve been 10 Goliaths standing there and David would’ve had the same focus because he knew there was nothing greater, nothing stronger than His God.
Our God created the things we can see in the sky. He works in the things of the sky as we’ve seen in examples used in this article. As I’ve said earlier in this article, it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day activities, but isn’t just good to stop, go outside, take a sec-ond, and look up? The God who made what you see is the same God you can talk to when you bow your face down to the ground and pray. Isn’t He awesome? Isn’t He the One to adore? I encour-age you and myself to take a few seconds this week and just look up. The same God that made what you see, made you, died for you, offers you salvation and is greater than whatever could be put against Him. Let us take comfort in these facts!
